Current Situation
E.A. Sween Company announced the recall of multiple products due to possible contamination of Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

Critical Recall Details
- Tip Top Poultry, Inc. initiated a recall and is an ingredient provider to two E.A. Sween Company suppliers.
- To date, E.A. Sween has not received any reported illnesses related to this organism.
- We are taking this action out of caution for the safety of our consumers.
Key Actions
- Retailers should remove the affected products from store shelves and inventory immediately.
- Customers with questions should call our Customer Service hotline 1-800-328-8184 and select #6.
- Consumers may return affected product to the store where they purchased for a full refund or exchange. If the affected product was consumed, they can call our Consumer Hotline 1-800-328-8184 and select #5.
Wholesale & Retail Customer FAQ
What should I do with affected product found on my shelves or in inventory?
Affected products received prior to 10/8/19 should be removed and destroyed.
- Please provide proof of destruction when submitting for reimbursement to E.A. Sween Company.
- Please create a letter including the following: Quantity; Who destroyed; When destroyed; How destroyed; photos of destroyed product.
- Small quantities of product – open the packages to deface product, spray with bleach and throw away.
- Large quantities – crush with compactor to deface product, spray with bleach and throw away.
- Pallet quantities – engage a waste hauler to pick it up and provide a certificate of destruction. Someone should follow waste hauler to the dump site to ensure destruction.
If you are a Retailer/Store that pulls from a Wholesaler, please follow their recall instructions and submit proof of destruction to them.
Will I be reimbursed for product I remove and destroy?
Yes. You need to provide proof of destruction. You should create a letter including the following: Quantity; Who destroyed; When destroyed; How destroyed; photos of destroyed product.
When can I order new product and is it safe?
You can place an order for new product right away. E.A. Sween Company is actively replenishing product. Anything received after 10/8/19 is safe. All of our items not affected by the recall will continue to be supplied.
